All SBA Tasks are valid from 2025 until 2027 (June and November exams).

ABET Frequently Asked Questions

ABET stands for the Adult Basic Training and Education. It is also known as Adult Education and Training (AET) which provides adults with an opportunity to complete basic education. According to SAQA, Adult Basic Education is identified as a critical priority in South Africa and plays a vital role in equipping adult learners with the necessary knowledge, skills and values in order to be functional in society and as a person by contributing to the workforce, community and economy.

No, ABET Level 4 is the General Education and Training Certificate: Adult Basic Education and Training (GETC: ABET). The GETC is an NQF 1 qualification equivalent to Grade 9. The National Senior Certificate is an NQF 4 qualification. 

  1. Senior Certificate as Amended (ASC)
  2. Grade 10 and ultimately the National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  3. National Certificate: Vocational Qualifications at Levels 2, 3 and 4 which contain vocational specializations through TVET/FET Colleges.
  4. Occupational-specific qualifications at NQF Level 2, which consist of knowledge, skills and workplace experience and learning which fall under the QCTO.

The qualification SACAI assesses at NQF 1 is the General Education and Training Certificate: Adult Basic Education and Training, also known as the GETC: ABET, or ABET Level 4. It is an exit qualification and learners must achieve 120 credits. 

There are 5 levels in ABET:

  • Pre-ABET is also known as Basic Oral 
  • ABET Level 1
  • ABET Level 2
  • ABET Level 3
  • ABET Level 4 (GETC: ABET)

 

SACAI currently assesses all five levels. Assessments are offered monthly for all levels except for GETC: ABET. The GETC: ABET examinations are written in May/June and October/November.

All ABET exams must be written at a SACAI-registered ABET centre.

ABET is flexible, developmental and targeted at the specific needs of particular audiences, so it depends on the pace with which you wish to apply, and the program provided by the training provider.
